The Scudder Memorial Hospital is one of the pioneering health care institutions that came into being earlier than the CMC Hospital, Vellore. The history dates back to 1819, when Dr. John Scudder, the first medical missionary of the Reformed Church of America to the East came to India. He came along with three brothers, Rev. Henry M. Scudder, D.D., Rev. William W. Scudder D.D and Rev. Joseph Scudder who established the American Arcot Missions. This was started mainly to spread the word of Christ and to bring more people closer to Christ through the healing ministry. Dr. Silas Scudder established the Scudder Memorial Hospital in the year 1866. The new hospital building was built as a fitting memorial for the pioneering work done by Dr. John Scudder in the year 1928. The present hospital is a living monument of the various sacrifices the Scudder family made to establish the healing ministry in India especially in the South. Scudder Memorial Hospital is a Multispecialty Mission Hospital situated in the centre of the Ranipet. The land of Scudder Memorial Hospital is measured as 28.5 acres. Scudder Memorial Hospital is providing quality health care to the poor and needy people in and around Ranipet covering 75 villages, six towns and 10 panchayats with a population of 25 Lakhs approximately, irrespective of cast and creed for the past 152 YEARS. It is a Charitable Health Care Institution treating patients for a minimum cost and the poor rural patients almost free of cost. It has grown into a 240 bedded hospital and made telling impact in and around Ranipet.
Understanding the important role of a nurse in the medical team, it was felt that training nurses was necessary and in 1921 Miss. Noordyk started the School of Nursing. In 1926, the School was approved by the Govt. of Tamilnadu. Over the years, this school of nursing had produced more than 2235 Nurses to serve our church, community, country and overseas.
In October 2018, the School of Nursing has been evolved as Scudder College of Nursing with an intake of 50 students per year. In November 2019 the college of Nursing stepped up with additional course of Post Basic B.Sc Nursing with an intake of 20 students per year.
Quality Nursing Care is one of the great need in the health care system and Nursing is a profession which demands a high intelligence, complex skills, quick and prompt decision making with critical thinking and a compassionate heart. To train the graduate nurses with such qualities the Scudder Memorial Hospital taken up a step to provide knowledgeable, competent, and Excellent Nursing education to generate committed nurses who could provide high standard, uncompromised nursing care to their clients at various settings. In accordance to the Vision and Mission statement of our institution along with the existing motto of “ UNIVERSAL UNSELFISH SERVICE” , the Scudder College of Nursing would function and strive to achieve the Excellency in Nursing Education.
