Mrs. SUGANTHI BENJAMIN

Nursing Superintendent

“Let’s not get tired of doing good, because in time we’ll have a harvest if we don’t give up”

Galatians: 6:9

I feel overwhelmed and honored to write about our Nursing Services’ dynamic work over the past 156 years.

“As a nurse we have the opportunity to work, to heal the sufferer’s mind, soul, heart, and body, they may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel”.

We remember the tremendous number of people who worked hard and sacrificed their time to develop and strengthen Nursing Services.

The Nursing Service was indicated by Ms. W. Noordyk who started the Nursing Service in 1921 along with Dr. Galen F. Scudder.

In 1939 Ms. L.M. Marsilje came as an Ambassador of God to Preach and Practice the slogan of oneness in God through her selfless mission services. Ms. Noordyk and Ms. Mathew succeeded as the Nursing Superintendents of the Hospital in 1955. Nursing services and nursing education were looked after by the eminent nursing leader Ms. A. Mathews till 1955. Ms. L.M. Marsilje became the Dean of the School of Nursing and Ms. A. Mathews continued as Nursing Superintendent after 1955 till 1974. Her untiring service to the nursing services kept the standards of nursing service at the highest level. From then the Indian Nursing Administrators took charge of nursing service and rendered their remarkable service. At this moment I would like to thank Mrs. Kamala Mohanraj, Sis G.T. Mary, Mrs. Nalini Sundernath, Mrs. Asha Noble, & Mrs. Rose Kalpana Baskar for bringing this Nursing service into a great conspicuous place.

The nursing team comprises One Nursing Superintendent, Two Deputy Nursing Superintendents, 10 Nurse Managers, 128 Clinical Nurses, and 13 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives. The Nursing services take care of the House Keeping Department, Control Room, and Laundry Department. In addition, we are providing Special Home Care Services for the community people who are chronically ill, and recovering from surgery.  We are extending our services through community health for the needy people and conducting General camps including General Medicine, Eye, Dental, and specialty camps like cardiology, Dermatology, Pulmonary Medicine, Dental, and Ophthalmology in Rural and Urban areas.

Our nurse managers are teaching a few subjects like Fundamentals of Nursing and Infection Control for Dialysis, Anesthesia, Orthopedics, and Ophthalmology, for the students of Allied Health Science.

We received an award from the Nalam Deepalya Trust, Vellore District, for our good enough quality of service to the community.

In nursing services, on 3rd July 2022, Mrs. Jayakodi, Nurse Manager & and Mrs. Indra, Nurse Manager received the Florence Nightingale Award for their testament to their dedication and hard work during the period of COVID-19.

The Nursing Service continuously gets part in updating their knowledge and improving their skills by attending National Level & State Level seminars. Our Nurses presented the posters at the National Level Conferences.

Our staff nurses participated in the International level conference through the Zoom platform. We are invited to National-level and State-level conferences as Resource persons.

I had an opportunity to attend a National Level CMAI Conference in New Delhi on the 10th, and 11th of November 2022.

We extended our service as per the needs of the community. God blessed us to dedicate another 2 New Modular Operation Theaters, it’s been really skilled enough to assist with all the General Surgery, ENT, OMFS, and Urology.

We praise our almighty for his abundant blessing to open a Cardiac Cath Lab On 6th June 2020, where we are doing Angiogram, Angioplasty, Primary Angioplasty, TPI [Temporary Pacemaker Implantation], POBA [Percutaneous Old Balloon Angioplasty].

In Accident & Emergency Department we have extended 4 beds specific to trauma care in 2020. From October 2019, SMH took over the Dialysis Unit from the outsources and run the unit with 14 beds.

With the grace of God, we are happy to inform you that we have opened a New Obstetric and Gynecological Block with a total number of 48 beds:

I am grateful for your cooperation and compassion with which the staff of the Nursing Department work and exhibit the feeling of oneness through their services to glorify the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
